Pink Painting

I’ve found myself in a rut lately with my digital work, so I dragged a box of acrylic paints out of storage and got to work.  The piece featured above is 12″ x 12″ nail polish and acrylic on canvas, titled “Cufflinks.”  It features imagery that I found in an antique newspaper advertisement, an online personals ad, and a “thank you” card from my cousin’s wedding.

For my Winter Review  I would like to present a body of painted work alongside some of my video work, to see if there might be a relationship between the two, or at least to hear what is said about the paintings as it’s been several years since I’ve presented any painting for critique.

I like the way this piece turned out.  It incorporates representational images with non-representational applications of paint.  I feel that both of those elements work together to transcend what each of them offers on their own.  It is super pink and glittery, by far the gayest painting I’ve ever made.  Ironically it achieves this without any direct reference to sex, even without showing any exposed genitalia.  This makes me kind of happy, because it’s something I’ve been trying to do with my digital collages since I started graduate school, but with no avail.
