October

This month’s pass is two shades of orange. Surprisingly peaceful. These colors remind Melissa of Dreamsicle and I tend to agree.
Amie and Nikki are moving out, to co-habitate with their respective boyfriends. This leaves two rooms in the house to be rented, and I’ve posted an ad on Craigslist. We’ve received a huge number of responses - almost overwhelming. I’m surprised at how many people have emailed me as a couple asking if they can share a room. My first reaction is one of extreme condescension, scoffing “Hell no. The rest of us have to pay full price for rent,” and then I remember my closet-situation. Nevertheless, I don’t believe people should get a discount for being in a relationship. It’s like that whole thing about gift registries for people who get married, but people who stay single all their lives have to come up with their own toasters, blenders, fine china and quality cookware. Hmph.
Last night we interviewed a number of applicants. It’s so difficult to size someone up in less than twenty minutes. Part of me feels bad that we have to pick only two, deeming everyone else “unworthy.” How crazy is that? It’s not as if I want to let everyone move in with us. I just hate making conclusive judgments about people. Maybe my mom is right, perhaps I am a bleeding heart liberal after all.
The good news is that given the high caliber of applicants, we won’t have any trouble finding good people to rent Amie and Nikki’s rooms. Amie and Nikki themselves, however, remain irreplaceable.
Just as I’ve been diligent jogging regularly (three miles at least every other day), I have also maintained diligence with painting. My ideal goal would be one painting per day… Hmm, I have not been that productive. But this morning I completed a second painting and have already started on a third. Finding the imagery for these is a challenge, and figuring out the colors, textures and composition that each one “wants” is like solving a riddle. A riddle that has more than a single correct answer.
Here is what I’ve solved for my second painting:

It is 12″ x 12″ acrylic on canvas, as of yet untitled.
