Dustin Lance Black

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

So tonight I was hanging out with my friends Brian, Kirby and Daniel in the Castro bar “The Lookout” on Market street, and past me walks film & TV screenwriter Dustin Lance Black and he steps out to the balcony for a smoke break.  And Brian’s all like “That’s the guy who wrote Milk” and I’m like “Oh wow you’re right!  I saw him on the Oscars and fell in love,” and Brian’s like “I feel stupid because we’re staring” and I’m like “I’m going to go talk to him.”  And I introduced myself, clumsily telling him that I loved seeing his Oscar acceptance speech, especially the part where he told all the gay and lesbian kids out there that “God does love you,” and how this pretty much made me cry, and that it meant so much to me coming from a similarly conservative upbringing and having to struggle with the conflicts between my spirituality and sexuality.   And I told him that he was an inspirational role model and as he finished his cigarette I thanked him and gracefully departed before literally putting my foot in my literal mouth.

Dustin Lance Black.  Seriously.   Wow.
